Far Away, So Close: Barbara Honigmann's Border Crossings as a Jew and a German Writer
Caroline Schaumann, Assistant Professor, German Studies
In this presentation I read Barbara Honigmann's autobiographical texts as a conscious and belated appropriation of her Jewish heritage. By writing German prose as a Jew in France, Honigmann (born 1949 in the German Democratic Republic) crosses not only geographical but religious, political, generational, ethnic, gender, and personal borders.
